KC Concepcion Had His Breakout Before Halftime. I Would Like To See A Second Week.

Browns rookie KC Concepcion caught eight passes for 129 yards in Sunday's 27-24 win over the Titans, all before halftime. Cleveland is 5-2 and tied for first in the AFC North with a minus-13 point differential. Friends, I trust neither the half nor the standings yet. I would still claim him.

Friends, the Browns are 5-2 this morning and tied with the Steelers for first place in the AFC North, per @UnderdogNFL. My father raised me on Cleveland football, so first place makes me want to check the basement for water.

Then there is KC Concepcion. The rookie caught eight passes for 129 yards in Sunday's 27-24 win over the Titans, and all eight came before halftime.

At halftime, @SleeperNFL posted, "The Browns have a SUPERSTAR." This morning's waiver chatter already has him in lineups. I would like to see a second week first, and I say that as a man who would dearly love a superstar.

What He Did Before Halftime

At the break, Scott Petrak had him at eight catches for 129 yards, and Paul Kuharsky counted nine targets. His final receiving line, per AP's Teresa M. Walker, was exactly the same. ESPN's Ben Solak also credited him with 23 rushing yards on three carries.

He did not catch a pass after halftime. In the third quarter he dropped a would-be touchdown, per Camryn Justice. Late in the game, an end around went 18 yards to the 9, and Deshaun Watson ran in a 9-yard touchdown for a 24-17 lead with 4:34 left, per Daniel Oyefusi.

First Place At Minus-13

Harold Fannin Jr.'s 36-yard catch set up Andre Szmyt's 32-yard walk-off field goal, capping Watson's league-high fifth game-winning drive, per Oyefusi. Cleveland has started 5-2 for the first time since the 2020 season. In my insurance years, a driver with a good record and five close calls got a phone call from me.

The Browns have also been outscored by 13 points this season. AP's Josh Dubow lists that minus-13 among the worst point differentials for a team at 5-2 or better since 2000, one line below the 2020 Browns at minus-21. Two of anything is a tradition in my family.

The Two-Sunday Rule

I give a one-half breakout the same squint. One summer I sold luxury hot tubs at county fairs, and every tub felt wonderful for the first half hour. My job was to get the paperwork signed before the second.

I call it the two-Sunday rule, and you may take it home: one good half earns a waiver claim, and a second good Sunday earns a lineup spot.

The rookie put it his own way, per Justice: "This week it was my breakout game, so I just can't wait to keep stacking weeks." That is my rule, neighbors, and he got there in three words.

One good half is a sample. Two good Sundays make a role, and I start roles.

The Credit He Earned

Per Andrew Siciliano, the 129 receiving yards were a career high, and Concepcion's 55 yards after contact were the most by any NFL wide receiver in a game this season, via NFL+ research. A play call gets a receiver the ball, and everything after the first hit is him.

He also owned the drop out loud. Per Justice, he said, "I've been working so hard on my drops, and I let that one get away from me, man. Ugh." In my warehouse years, I trusted the worker who reported the broken pallet before I found it.

Watson told him after the drop, per Justice, "KC, I need that. You owe me one." Then he added, "I'm going to keep coming to you, the opportunity is going to come," and it came late. Concepcion said of the end around, "I finally got my number called again and I made a play."

Todd Monken summed him up, per Oyefusi: "He’s a real dude." I believe all four words.

Chief, a recall notice is a company admitting a problem before it strands you, and I would welcome one from the standings. I concede the end around. The staff trusts him, and trust is where targets come from.

So here is my call, made against my family's religion, which forbids predicting good things for a Browns player. KC Concepcion will catch at least five passes against the Steelers next Sunday.

The call leans on Watson's promise to keep coming to him and on those nine first-half targets. If I am wrong, I will score it here, and nobody in my family will be surprised.

What I Am Doing About It

  1. If he is on my waiver wire, I am putting in a claim. One good half earns a modest one, and the rest of my budget stays home.
  2. If I already roster him, he sits behind any receiver with proven volume. One half is too small a sample to bench a man who has earned his targets. If your alternatives are thin, start him.
  3. I am watching whether his second half goes quiet again against Pittsburgh. One quiet half is a noise I can live with. The same noise two Sundays running goes on the lift.
  4. I am not selling Denzel Boston over one game. PFF has Concepcion third among rookies in receiving yards this season at 315, 129 of them Sunday, behind his teammate's 372.
  5. In dynasty, the buy window is shorter than it was Saturday. If I wanted him, I would make an offer this week, priced for one good half.

Gordy's Verdict

Claim KC Concepcion if he is on your wire, and keep the bid modest. Start him over proven volume only if your options are thin. Keep Denzel Boston. In dynasty, buy this week if you are buying. My call: KC Concepcion will catch at least five passes against the Steelers next Sunday. Revisit after that game, second half included.

Chief’s Rebuttal

Unsolicited, as always

Gordy has a rule that makes a rookie earn his Sunday twice, and I believe he would ask the sunrise for a second opinion. Folks, I concede that one half is one half. Gordy also put five catches on the record, which gives us a call we can grade next week. But I would start Concepcion right now. The ceiling is the point, and 55 yards after contact is a ceiling. You do not wait two Sundays for that. I am a Raiders fan. If my team found a rookie like this, I would name my boat after him and then check it for a motor.
