Cleveland Is Holding A Quarterback Competition And I Have Seen This Movie

Every summer a football team announces an open quarterback competition, and every summer some portion of the population hears the word competition and thinks of a race. It is not a race. A race has a finish line and a person holding a stopwatch. This is closer to two men arguing about who has to drive.

Camp opens tomorrow at the CrossCountry Mortgage Campus and runs through August 25. Todd Monken — three years running Baltimore's offense, now in his first year in charge here — said he wanted to walk into camp with a clear starter. He was impressed with both men during the offseason program. So he did not name one.

I want to be careful with my language, because Monken is a good offensive coach and I am not interested in being unfair to a man who has done nothing to me personally yet. But I have lived in this state of mind my entire adult life, and I can tell you what "impressed with both" means. It means neither.

What We Actually Know

• Watson is healthy. Two Achilles surgeries, an entire lost 2025 season, and he is back on the field. That is a genuine medical accomplishment and I am not going to be cute about it.
• Sanders took real reps. He and Watson split the bulk of the spring work. Dillon Gabriel, the 2025 third-rounder, got what was left.
• The roster is in a rebuild. They traded Myles Garrett. When a team moves its best defensive player, it has told you what season it thinks this is.

That last bullet is the one nobody wants to sit with. You do not trade a generational pass rusher and then quietly contend. The front office has already filed its opinion about 2026. The quarterback competition is happening inside that opinion, not in spite of it.

A rebuild does not hold auditions. A rebuild holds a waiting period and calls it an audition.

The Fantasy Read, Such As It Is

Not in redraft. Not in single-quarterback leagues of any size. The pass-catchers behind an unsettled quarterback situation on a rebuilding roster are not a market inefficiency, they are a discount for a reason. Every year somebody in your league drafts the Browns' second receiver in the tenth round because he read the phrase ascending talent on a website. Every year that man finishes eighth.

Chief is not entirely wrong, and I want the record to show I said that out loud. In superflex and in dynasty, Sanders is worth owning, because the cost is low and the outcome where Monken develops him is a real outcome that happens in real football. I am not telling you the man cannot play. I am telling you that August is the most expensive month to find out.

Why I Am Like This

My father raised me on Cleveland football the way other families pass down farmland or a pocket watch or a hereditary condition. What he taught me, without ever saying it directly, is that loyalty means continuing to watch after hope has become medically inadvisable.

So when I read that a new head coach was impressed with both quarterbacks, I did not feel optimism. I felt the specific, familiar calm of a man who has already seen the ending and is only here for the middle part.
