The Raiders Drafted A Franchise Quarterback And Immediately Hid Him In A Closet

Folks, I want you to understand the emotional position I am writing from. It is Monday morning. Raiders veterans report tomorrow. The first practice of the 2026 season happens Wednesday at the Intermountain Health Performance Center, and I have already been informed, by people paid to inform me, that Kirk Cousins is expected to begin the season as the starter.

I want to be fair here, so let me lay out the case for the defense before I begin the cross-examination. Cousins is a professional. He knows where the sticks are. He will complete a lot of passes for eight yards on third-and-eleven and then look genuinely confused about why everyone is upset.

Now let me tell you what actually happened this spring, because the rep sheet does not lie and the rep sheet is the only witness in this building that has not been coached.

The Reps Already Told On Them

Through OTAs and mandatory minicamp, Cousins worked mostly with the first team. Mendoza — the rookie, the guy they spent real draft capital on, the reason half of you moved him up your dynasty boards in May — split second- and third-team reps with Aidan O'Connell.

Read that again. Not "Mendoza pushed for ones." Not "the competition is open." He split the twos. With the incumbent backup. In shorts. In June.

A rookie splitting second-team reps in June is not a competition. It is a seating chart.

The organization's public position is that they are not in a rush to hand Mendoza the keys. I believe them. That is precisely the problem. Nobody has ever announced they were not in a rush and then done something exciting. "We are not in a rush" is what a man says right before he spends four months proving it.

What This Actually Means For Your Draft

Here is where I stop performing grief and start being useful, because I know why you clicked this.

• Brock Bowers is unaffected and possibly helped. Cousins throws to the middle of the field early in downs and gets the ball out fast. That is a tight end's dream and it is the one part of this offense I would bet my own money on.
• The rookie is a stash, not a starter. In redraft, Mendoza is a bench quarterback you do not need. In dynasty and in superflex, he is exactly the kind of asset you buy while the price is depressed by a depth chart that will not survive Halloween.
• Do not chase the Vegas wide receivers in August. A Cousins offense concentrates targets and shortens the field. Somebody in that room is going to be very useful and very cheap in October. Let the other twelve people in your league find out who first.
• The kicker job is genuinely open. So is long snapper. I mention this only because it is the single most Raiders sentence I have typed this year.

The Part Where I Admit Something

I have been a Raiders fan since I was old enough to decide that silver and black looked like the only uniform in the league that might have outstanding warrants. I have been lied to by August before. I have sat in a folding chair in Oklahoma in ninety-eight-degree heat and told grown men that this was the year, and then watched the season end in a manner best described as avoidable.

So I am not going to sit here and tell you the rookie is starting Week 1. He is not. The tape from June said he is not. The rep sheet said he is not. The head coach said it in the polite way that coaches say things when they would like you to stop asking.

What I am going to tell you is that Cousins has never once in his career been the reason a bad team stayed bad, and he has also never once been the reason a good team got great. He is a bridge. And a bridge, by definition, is a thing you walk across on your way somewhere else.
