Marvin Harrison Jr. Is In Trade Limbo And I Am Buying Before Anybody Says Where

Adam Schefter and Ian Rapoport reported Saturday that Arizona is finalizing a deal to trade Marvin Harrison Jr. He is inactive Sunday against Detroit, and as of late morning nothing is final and no team is confirmed. Folks, his price stays this low until somebody announces where he is going, so I am buying.

Folks, it is late Sunday morning, and I am typing a dynasty trade offer with a bourbon and cola in my other hand. The offer is for Marvin Harrison Jr., who is inactive today, and nobody has confirmed where he is going.

I have a documented weakness for troubled receivers (bad box score, sad manager) and for buying before the tape exists. This time the tape does not even have a uniform yet.

What The Reporters Actually Said

Adam Schefter and Ian Rapoport reported Saturday that the Cardinals are "finalizing a deal" to trade Harrison and that the team told him he will be inactive Sunday against Detroit. Rapoport: "No trade is finalized as of now. But he's expected to be traded." Mike Garafolo of NFL Network: "Didn’t even get close to the trade deadline." Saturday night, ESPN's Josh Weinfuss reported he "was not at team meetings".

Houston is the most reported team. Jordan Schultz reported "deep negotiations" between the Cardinals and Texans. Aaron Wilson of KPRC2 reported a "2028 second-round draft pick involved in potential deal." Jeremy Fowler of ESPN wrote Saturday night that multiple executives and an Arizona player source "believe Harrison Jr. will be a Houston Texan". Sunday morning, Rapoport called the Texans "a team to watch. Nothing is done, and today's results could change things." Houston is 0-4 and plays the 0-4 Titans today, per Wilson.

On price, Tom Pelissero reported Arizona "would want a second-round pick and more" to consider dealing "the former No. 4 pick." Schultz reported Arizona is still listening to other teams "with the hopes of receiving a 1st-round draft choice" and that "at least one of those clubs feels MHJ is worth a Day 2 pick."

Reported out: the Colts (Mike Chappell, via Underdog), the Chiefs and Colts (Aaron Wilson) and the Eagles (Johnny Venerable of PHNX). Sleeper's list of teams "confirmed out" adds the Browns.

Talent Times Opportunity, Divided By Panic

A receiver's fantasy value is talent times opportunity: what he does with the ball, times how often it comes and who throws it. A trade leaves the talent alone and rewrites the opportunity overnight.

Prices get set by the last box score and by uncertainty. His box score is what Aaron Wilson called "A rough 2026 so far": "five catches for 85 yards, one touchdown on 13 targets." There is no announced destination, and his managers are miserable. Sleeper captioned a video "How life feels as a Marvin Harrison Jr. dynasty managers" and Matthew Berry wrote: "The cruelest thing to happen to anyone that drafted Marvin Harrison Jr this year is him not being active to face the Lions secondary."

The uncertainty ends the day a team is announced, and the discount goes with it, because the projections get rewritten for the new offense. The only window to buy at the limbo price is before that.

Uncertainty is a coupon. The announcement is the expiration date.

Then the exhibit the box score cannot argue with: NFL teams are reportedly negotiating in draft picks, with a second-rounder in both Pelissero's and Wilson's reporting. That is a professional opinion with money behind it, from people paid to watch film.

The Evidence Against Me, Entered By Me

Matt Harmon of Yahoo wrote that a trade "won't free up many targets for Michael Wilson, since Marv wasn't getting many looks". Thirteen targets is a thin file. At least one interested club, per Schultz, sees only a Day 2 pick, and that opinion has money behind it, too. And nobody knows the landing spot, so the opportunity half could get worse as easily as better.

One exhibit for my side, by our own math: 17 yards a catch this season (85 on 5) against about 14.6 for his career (1,578 on 108). Five catches is a tiny sample. But when the ball has found him, it has traveled.

Gordy has never let me forget the boat, which was a fine boat for a man with nowhere to be. Here the motor is the part NFL teams are bidding picks on. Nobody knows the road yet, and the road gets announced the same day the price goes up.

What I Am Doing About It

  1. In dynasty, I am buying Harrison at the limbo price from the most frustrated manager I can find. I translate the NFL's reported range into rookie picks: I open at a second, and my ceiling is one future first. Waiting for the announcement only gets me the answer after the price has moved.
  2. In redraft, he cannot help your Week 5 lineup. He is inactive, so bench him. Hold him if you have the room, since his value depends on a team nobody has announced.
  3. What would change my mind: a landing spot with no target path. That shrinks the opportunity half, and I stop buying. Same if Arizona settles for a Day 2 price, because then the NFL agrees with the box score.
  4. Michael Wilson gets a small Cardinals bump, in Harmon's view. Harmon thinks a trade gives Michael Wilson "a slight bump in his usage at X-receiver." I price it as slight: a deep-league add if he is on your waiver wire.

Sleeper posted a fill-in-the-blank: "Can’t believe Marvin Harrison Jr. is getting traded to the __________ tonight." The internet filled it in faster than reporters could rule anything out, my Raiders included. No reporter I read connects them to Harrison. They appear in this story only in posts from accounts with no sources, which may be the most Raiders sentence I have typed all year.

Chief's Verdict

Buy Harrison in dynasty before a team is announced, opening at a second-round rookie pick with a ceiling of one future first. In redraft he is inactive, so bench him for Week 5 and hold. If he lands with no path to targets, I stop buying and will say so here.

Gordy’s Rebuttal

Unsolicited, as always

Chief once sold used trucks, and he has finally found a sale he cannot resist: the one where nobody has opened the hood. I concede the mechanism, neighbors. Uncertainty is a discount, and the draft-pick talk counts for something. But Harmon wrote that "Marv wasn't getting many looks," one interested club reportedly sees a Day 2 pick, and nobody can tell you who will be throwing him the ball. I buy a receiver after I know his quarterback. That costs more, and the extra is what I pay to know what I bought. My patience is a feature. The Browns gave it to me, and it is the only feature they gave me that still works.

Everybody Added Will Shipley. The Early-Down Work May Go To Dameon Pierce.

The Eagles ruled out Saquon Barkley (hamstring) for Sunday's Week 5 game against the Jaguars in London, with Tank Bigsby on injured reserve. Fantasy managers added Will Shipley. Nick Sirianni called Dameon Pierce "an NFL starting running back." Friends, before you start either one, find out which job came open.
