Josh Allen's Legs Score Half His Fantasy Points, And That Is The Whole Point

The Bills beat the Rams 37-34 in overtime Monday night. Josh Allen threw only 19 passes and ran for 121 yards in his first career overtime win. By our math, about half his fantasy scoring this season comes from running. Folks, that is the cheat code, and I intend to prove it.

My fellow victims, @YahooFantasy had Josh Allen at "3.22 fantasy points" in the first half Monday night and "31.5 fantasy points" after the game. In between, my bourbon and cola went warm in my hand. That gap is the whole case.

By midnight the hype was in capital letters. @SleeperNFL declared "Week 5 was absolute CINEMA" and @NFLonCBS captioned a reaction clip "Are you not entertained? It starts and it stops with Josh Allen!" I was entertained, folks. During the game I was exactly who @YahooFantasy meant by "Josh Allen fantasy managers watching him play football every week".

The Facts Of The Case

The Bills won 37-34 in overtime, per the @RamsNFL recap post, and Sal Capaccio wrote that they "survived a wild, epic Monday Night Football game". Harrison Mevis' potential game-winning 48-yard try in overtime was blocked (Stu Jackson: "Looked like Bills' Greg Rousseau got his left hand on it"), and Tyler Bass won it, per @NFL.

Allen went 12 of 19 for 210 yards with a touchdown and an interception, per Alex Brasky, and ran for 121 yards and a touchdown, per @UnderdogNFL. @BuffaloBillsPR says he became "the first player in NFL history with 200+ passing yards on 20 or fewer pass attempts and 100+ rushing yards on 10 or fewer rush attempts in the same game."

It was also his first career overtime win after seven losses, per @PFF, and Allen said, per @SleeperNFL: "It feels good to be on this end." James Cook fumbled in overtime, and Brasky wrote that Cook "almost cost the Bills the game".

The Cheat Code Is Written In Your Scoring Settings

Exhibit A is your scoring settings. In standard formats, a rushing yard pays more than a passing yard, and a rushing touchdown pays more than a passing touchdown. A quarterback who takes off gets the better rate, so he can have a quiet night through the air and still win your week.

Exhibit B is the pace. JJ Zachariason has Allen at 28.6 standard points per game, third-best for any quarterback through five weeks since 2016. His next post says "he's giving fantasy managers 14.4 PPG via rushing alone." That is the most for a quarterback through five weeks since 2016, and "the first time anyone's been over 13 PPG via rushing."

By our math, 14.4 of 28.6 is about half. He leads the league with 8 rushing touchdowns, per @UnderdogNFL, and @RotoWire has him among three players with a touchdown in every game this season. Half his points come from the part of the game that pays better. That is a floor, folks, and it hurt to type that word.

The arm is the bet. The legs are the hedge, and the hedge pays better.

Put the word on the 2014 tab, Gordy. The 3.22 was one half, and your league pays on the game, which came to 31.5. I have no split for the rest. When the throwing goes cold, he still has a way to get paid.

Exhibits For The Other Side, Filed By Me

Allen said he is "fighting some stuff mechanically that I’m working on", per Brasky, and he threw an interception. I believe him, and Gordy already entered the 3.22.

Then the record book. Zachariason wrote that "no quarterback has hit 11 PPG via rushing in a season." He added: "Justin Fields in 2022 was at 10.8. Lamar's first MVP season was at 10.7." Allen is at 14.4. I figure some cooling is normal for a pace no full season has reached, and I price it in.

Brasky also counts 11 fumbles for James Cook since the start of the 2025 season, and "No other RB has more than 6 over that span". Cook and Allen score on the ground together: @BuffaloBillsPR counts 15 regular-season games with a rushing touchdown from both, tying Ezekiel Elliott and Dak Prescott for the most by any teammate duo. A lost fumble ends a drive before either one can finish it.

What I Am Doing About It

  1. In redraft, I start Allen every week and quit checking his halftime line. I trust the running to cover a cold half through the air. Monday's halftime check bought me 3.22 points of worry and a warm drink.
  2. In dynasty, I am not selling Allen at a regression discount. Anybody offering one is pricing the record book I just read you. My price is a quarterback I would start anyway, plus a future first.
  3. I hold James Cook, fumbles and all. Eleven fumbles since the start of 2025 is a ball-security problem, and Brasky noted "Ray Davis getting work late" Monday. One game of late work is something to watch. If it grows, Cook's touchdowns are the first thing I expect him to lose.
  4. I change my mind if the running dries up or the mechanics talk becomes a pattern. One interception and one honest quote make a Monday. If running stops covering about half his scoring over a month, or the interceptions pile up, I re-price him and say so here.

I spent nine months at a fireworks distributor, where rule one was never to walk back up to a shell that looks like a dud. Some are just slow. I am a Raiders fan, so I know a real dud when I see one. Monday was a slow fuse.

Chief's Verdict

Start Josh Allen every week in redraft and stop reading his halftime line. In dynasty, I would not sell him at a regression discount. Hold James Cook, watch whether Ray Davis keeps getting late work, and if Allen's running stops covering half his points for a month, I will say so here.

Gordy’s Rebuttal

Unsolicited, as always

Chief has written a whole column about a floor and winced when he typed the word. I concede the mechanism, neighbors. In standard scoring the running pays better, and about half of Allen's points come from it. But JJ Zachariason says no quarterback has hit 11 rushing points a game over a full season, and Allen is at 14.4. The first half Monday was worth 3.22, and Allen named his own mechanics problem. I start him too. I just would not pay Chief's dynasty price for a pace no quarterback has carried through a season. Patience is the one feature on my truck that has never needed a part. The Browns installed it at the factory.

Everybody Added Will Shipley. The Early-Down Work May Go To Dameon Pierce.

The Eagles ruled out Saquon Barkley (hamstring) for Sunday's Week 5 game against the Jaguars in London, with Tank Bigsby on injured reserve. Fantasy managers added Will Shipley. Nick Sirianni called Dameon Pierce "an NFL starting running back." Friends, before you start either one, find out which job came open.
